Spotlight: Deafheaven - 'Infinite Granite' New Zealand Shows

Chris Cudby / Monday 24th April, 2023 11:52AM

One of the most powerful acts you're likely to experience live in 2023, California's Deafheaven will soon be treating Aotearoa audiences to songs from their sonically swirling latest album Infinite Granite. Threading together elements of celestial shoegaze, cinematic post-rock and searing metal into their own transcendent tapestry of sound, Deafheaven's fifth studio long player reaped widespread acclaim when it launched in mid-2021 — hailed by The Guardian as a "great, great album, one that exists entirely on its creators' terms". Initially barred from touring New Zealand due to pandemic travel restrictions when their new record came out, Deafheaven are finally returning to our shores for a long-awaited pair of headline events at Tāmaki Makaurau's The Tuning Fork and Pōneke's San Fran — nestled amidst their most extensive Australasian tour to date, including a slot at Hobart's prestigious Dark Mofo festival. Attendance is of course mandatory, don't dare miss the globally acclaimed US five-piece's first local shows in four years, also marking the tenth anniversary of Deafheaven's 2013 blackgaze opus Sunbather...

Press release:

American shoegaze-meets-black-metal trailblazers DEAFHEAVEN have announced their most extensive Australian & New Zealand headline tour to date, scheduled for May & June 2023.

The band are touring in support of their acclaimed new album ‘Infinite Granite.’ The record features some of their finest melodic songwriting to date, whilst exploring less intense sonic territory than their previous records.

From the uplift of ‘Great Mass of Color’ to the brooding ‘In Blur’, the record is awash with lush soundscapes conjured by the band and anchored by singer George Clarke’s startlingly impressive melodic tenor and multi part harmonies.

Their live show continues to be a juxtaposition of epic proportions and this tour will be no exception, with five diverse studio albums to draw from. The band will also celebrate 10 years of their seminal ‘blackgaze’ record ‘Sunbather’.
