Spotlight: The Damned Returning To New Zealand In June

Spotlight: The Damned Returning To New Zealand In June

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 17th May, 2023 11:25AM

Absolute icons of UK punk and goth, The Damned arose in 1976 alongside fellow London first-wave legends The Clash and Sex Pistols to define the sound of ruckus rock 'n' roll rebellion across the globe. Notably "the first British punk band to release a single, release an album, have a record hit the UK charts" — their debut album Damned Damned Damned — it's no exaggeration to state The Damned's impact has been immeasurable and they're charging hard as ever today, still fronted by singer David Vanian (Dave Letts) with co-founder Captain Sensible, Paul Gray, Monty Oxymoron and Will Taylor. Notably described by Lemmy from Motörhead as “the only real punk band” (what higher recommendation is there?), attendance is of course mandatory for The Damned's upcoming headline dates in Auckland and Wellington. With twelve studio long players under their belts so far, including Machine Gun Etiquette (1979), Phantasmagoria (1985) and their aforementioned debut, fans can look forward to time-honoured classics, plus tunes from The Damned's brand new album Darkadelic when they return to Aotearoa this winter. Press release:

Notoriously referred to by Motörhead’s Lemmy (RIP) as “the only real punk band”, the legendary British punk pioneers, The Damned, have announced their return to Australia and New Zealand for a series of highly anticipated shows in June.

Forged in the hot fire of first wave punk and highly regarded for their riotous live shows and formidable stage presence, The Damned are the greatest surviving British punk band, still firing on all cylinders, breaking all the rules for their brash fusion of frenetic punk rock and gothic influences, and are often regarded alongside The Clash and Sex Pistols as a seminal force in driving the genre’s popularity.

Formed in 1976, The Damned’s career spans over four decades, releasing numerous acclaimed albums, including Damned Damned Damned, Machine Gun Etiquette, and Phantasmagoria. The upcoming tour will see the band perform classic hits as well as tracks from their forthcoming album, DARKADELIC, set for release on April 28th.

Don’t miss out on the chance to see one of the most acclaimed and revered punk acts live. Fans are urged to secure their tickets early, as shows are expected to sell out quickly.
