Space Waltz Announce 'An Evening with Space Waltz' Tour + Share New Album 'Victory'

Chris Cudby / Friday 19th May, 2023 10:30AM

Space Waltz are the very first Aotearoa group to be showcased in the prestigious new 33 1/3 Oceania book series, as writer Ian Chapman's deep dive into their 1975 debut album Alastair Riddell's Space Waltz is finally out in stores (order your copy HERE). Still fronted by glam rock visionary Alastair Riddell, today the pioneering group thrill fans and make the history books once more with their second album Victory, Space Waltz's first collection of new material in nearly 50 years!

It's time to celebrate — Space Waltz have announced four headline shows for September and October, starring the touring band of Alastair Riddell, Eddie Rayner (Split Enz, Crowded House), Peter Cuddihy (Phil Manning Band, Human Instinct), Patrick Kuhtze (Stars in Their Eyes, Jordan Luck, Billy T James), Derek Solomon (Solomon Cole Band) with backing vocalists Nikki Ngatai and Meredith Wilkie. Promising to play songs from both their groundbreaking debut and brand new album, Space Waltz's forthcoming headline shows in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and New Plymouth are simply not to be missed. Their classic first record is also receiving a freshly remastered vinyl and compact disc edition, out today via Universal (available HERE). Hit play on Victory, order the compact disc edition HERE and get tickets while you can...

"To this day Riddell and Space Waltz epitomize the mid-1970's heyday of glam rock in New Zealand... Riddell's controversial gender-bending image provided a cultural crossroads that greatly impacted the wider youth culture of Aotearoa... They were confronted by a flamboyantly dressed glam-esque rocker who primped, preened, strutted, and posed with a performative style never before seen from a local lad. More akin to the theatrical performance style of Marc Bolan (T Rex) and David Bowie (well before his Ziggy Stardust era), this was a culture-shock moment in the extreme. Truly, things would never be the same.” — Ian Chapman

Press release:

Aotearoa’s glam rock pioneers, Space Waltz, present “An Evening with Space Waltz” an intimate performance featuring iconic track “Out on the Street”, hits from their first record “Alastair Riddell’s Space Waltz”, and their new album, “Victory”.

Space Waltz reframed music for New Zealand in the 1970s, bringing a sense of wonder and excitement to youth tired of the staid, formulaic tunes that were available to them at the time. They energised New Zealand's kids and terrified the parents, worried about this new androgynous style of dress, and this thing called glam rock that hadn't yet made it to New Zealand.

"An Evening with Space Waltz” is an intimate performance featuring songs from both new and reissued Space Waltz albums. The trailblazing rock band will perform hits from their eponymous album (including the iconic track ‘Out on the Street’) adding songs from their new album, "Victory" and stories from their extraordinary time in show business. This special evening's combination of music and personal insight of their musical journey reinforce their place as a unique cultural touchstone of NZ musical history.

The incredible Space Waltz touring band is Alastair Riddell, Eddie Rayner (Split Enz and Crowded House), Peter Cuddihy (Phil Manning Band, Human Instinct), Patrick Kuhtze (Stars in Their Eyes, Jordan Luck, Billy T James), Derek Solomon (Solomon Cole Band) with backing vocalists Nikki Ngatai and Meredith Wilkie. !
