The glimmering sound of the earlier decades breaks through the bird chirps and rumbling traffic, as Hemi Hemingway’s debut album Strangers Again is today brought forth via Swedish label Punk Slime Records. The man behind the alias is Shaun Blackwell (Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga), now based back in Aotearoa following an extended stint in London. The making of his first long player began in a flat in Hackney and concluded in Te Ika-a-Māui, the experience of reconnecting with his roots expressed across ten heart-melting, soul-soaring tunes. Highlights include the title tracks's wispy love-letter, lamenting te reo synth ballad 'January Lake #3', and the ripping guitar and emotional build up of 'Dreamin' of You'. Every instrument is played by the rock 'n' roll maestro himself, except for the expert saxophone touch of Lily Shaw.

Hemingway will be playing at the Creeps Rad Fest 2023 on 7th October alongside such fellow heavy hitters as Bad Taste, Mirror Ritual and Unsanitary Napkin. Don’t miss out on tickets below to this four-venue bash and be sure to grab limited edition vinyl LP of Strangers Again from today…

“On the Strangers Again cover, I’m dressed all in white, and there’s all this openness, and me standing up tall on the edge of New Zealand looking south. I feel like this relates to the openness that I felt when I returned to New Zealand and finished Strangers Again, compared to the isolation I was feeling when I wrote and released The Lonely Hunter. Writing this album has definitely helped me to open up again, and to heal somewhat from the last few years.”
