Tāmaki Makaurau indie sensation K M T P aka Keria Paterson (Te Arawa, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāi Tahu) today shares their fervently awaited debut album With Love, K M T P via Sunreturn. The SRN chart-topping songwriter largely produced the record over a week with Peter Ruddell (Wax Chattels, Sulfate) at Jonathan Pearce’s (The Beths) Karangahape Road studio, with James Goldsmith (DARTZ) then polishing the final master. Drummer for Polyester, Dirty Pixels and Dead Famous People, Paterson transports us into scenes of nostalgia and time in their own unabashedly emotive long player. Standout tunes are the fruitful and rock-heavy ‘Walk Out To Space’, the acoustic backbone of ‘Was Fun’ cross-wired with electric surges of varied instrumentation, and the romantic droning of '2 Days' —the way our minds do in obsession—until the brass is last to flee the scene.
Special guest stars of our third and final Trash Recital season, Paterson embarks on a five date album release tour from this weekend (with band and solo) onwards, swooping off from their super city home turf towards Ōtautahi, Ōtepoti and Pōneke, then circling back for a triumphant Whammy Bar rager. “The main themes for the album are about self-discovery and self-reflection. It’s a very personal album for me, and it deals with a lot of experiences I had growing up in my early twenties. A lot of the other themes are fairly grim: depression, anxiety, self-acceptance, finding love. I’ve tried to contrast the sombre themes in the album with upbeat and emo-adjacent guitar riffs and ‘wall of sound’ drum and bass riffs.”
