Watch Goodnight My Darling's Video For 'The Empress'

Soon to share the stage with fellow rising force in Aotearoa songwriting Greta O'Leary at Te Whanganui-a-Tara's Old St Pauls in early December, Maxine Macaulay aka Goodnight My Darling recently unveiled cinematic visuals to accompany her latest single 'The Empress'. Drawing inspiration from novelist Becky Manawatu's ĀUE and named after the tarot card which can signify "the creation of life, romance, art, or business", the head-scarfed artist's accompanying video for the song feels suitably Lynchian in its darkened depiction of "The Hollywood Dream with a twist." Directed, co-produced and edited by Tyler Burke and Will Hadwen, experience Goodnight My Darling's haunting creation and catch her live with band on 9th December...

"The song references themes from the book... like the cyclical nature of grief and patterns of pain that we get stuck in, and I guess that is also evident with how we are currently placed with global warming. The Empress Card represents the loving, protective mother that cares for all. And I had a Mark Rothko painting poem reflection on me, and wove pieces of this in. I like piecing lyrics together like this sometimes.”
