The end of year highlights lists are starting to rack up, but there's still plenty of crucial Aotearoa releases to enjoy and killer shows to go to before we say "see ya" to 2023. Revisit this tidy news week's coverage of Delaney Davidson, Jim Nothing and Schkeuditzer Kreuz, then delve downwards for local release highlights from Home Brew, And$um, Thee Golden Geese, Bailterspace, HOIHOI, Repairs, Racing and carpet dust.

Aotearoa hip hop legends from the get-go, Tom Scott and the reunited Home Brew crew have unveiled their fiendishly awaited first new album in over a decade Run It Back, plus the first instalment of a documentary reflecting on the group's rise directed by Andy Day. You can order the vinyl LP edition as a perfect Xmas stocking stuffer right HERE. Scott shared these words about Home Brew's return with The Spinoff: "I used to think I had to keep making the same mistakes to make another Home Brew album. Thought I had to stay the person I was then forever. But, nah, that was something I made up. I dug my own pigeonhole. Truth is that nobody wanted me to stay the same forever. They wanted me to grow... And I’m not the only one who has grown up – the people who grew up with that album grew up too”.

Elevating Aotearoa's student radio airwaves with 'High Beams' featuring Vallé, Ōtautahi rapper / producer And$um today drops his sophomore album Late Night Down Brougham — celebrating tonight at darkroom with Jay Okay, Common Child and TEEZE Beats x Necrum Select (get tickets HERE). "Living in Lyttelton, Brougham Street was what connected me to the world. I'd driven that street so many times and for so many different reasons that it feels like a part of me.'Late Night Down Brougham' is an ode to Christchurch, specifically my view of it. It reflects the highs and lows that I've had since leaving high school, and everything I've had to deal with".

Tāmaki Makaurau's soul-rockin' hitmakers Thee Golden Geese toast the many talents of drummer James Dansey in their budget-blowing new video for 'Amazing James' — featured on the group's debut album Bird of the Year 2023. You too will be flabbergasted by Amazing James and his incomparable Wolverine drum stick skills when you hit that play button...

A pivotal influence on multiple generations of Aotearoa artists, sonic powerhouses Bailterspace — Brent McLachlan, John Halvorsen and Alister Space — share three unreleased tracks on their Newspaperman EP.

Ōtautahi post-punks HOIHOI deliver an electrifying racket on their TAHITAHI EP, bundling together four waita sung in both te reo and English. Not only is it the group's first ever physical release (on citrusy yellow vinyl 7"), if you move fast you can score one of five custom AHIAHI guitar pedals made by Glacial Creative — that's some quality merch, orderable via the Bandcamp link below. Catch them at darkroom on 6th April (tickets available HERE). "HOIHOI means be quiet! (and be noisy!) in te reo Māori, with TAHITAHI featuring lyrics in both Māori and English. HOIHOI stands with everyone around the world who is learning & singing in their ancestral language. E tū!"

Tāmaki Makaurau's Repairs sound bracingly spiky and urgent on their first new single in three years 'Map, Territory' — "an ode to relentless anxiety and unease with the world; we hope you love it as much as we do."

Gearing up for the big summer gig season including a party with Kora at Ōakura's Butler's Reef on 20th January (tickets HERE), Tāmaki Makaurau's Racing released neon-drenched visuals for their Madchester groover 'Hips' — from their 2022 album Must Be The Moon.

Spotlighted in a timely interview over at Audio Foundation's Soundbleed journal project HERE, Aotearoa signalwave artist TV2 reactivates her carpet dust moniker for excellently named collection of atemporal sonic knickknacks pre-love.
