Marcus Whale and REBEL YELL (Aus) Auckland Show Announced

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 7th February, 2024 2:54PM

Visiting Aotearoa later this month as part of the (still largely under wraps) lineup for Camp A Low Hum in Wainuiomata, Sydney-based electronic innovators Marcus Whale and REBEL YELL have announced an side show at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammy Bar to kick things off. The solo project of Grace Stevenson, REBEL YELL's output encompasses three studio albums and numerous EP / single releases so far, including the scorched body-hammering beatscapes of her latest album DESOLATION (released in 2023 via Dinosaur City Records). Nominee for multiple Australian Music Awards, Marcus Whale's (also of Collarbones, BV) prolific art / music practice extends beyond club boundaries — spilling into performance and gallery spaces to "stage the experience of uncontrollable desire and chaotic devotion, often with reference to aesthetics of horror and homosexuality, as well as religious iconography, liturgy and ritualistic ecstasy". They will be joined by Power Nap (aka myself) and aural experimentalist Christian Dimick for this crucial mid-week show — details below..

Press release:

Marcus Whale and REBEL YELL visit Whammy Bar alongside Power Nap and Christian Dimick for a special mid-week Camp A Low Hum side show.

Marcus Whale makes music and performances that stage the experience of uncontrollable desire and chaotic devotion, often with reference to aesthetics of horror and homosexuality, as well as religious iconography, liturgy and ritualistic ecstasy.

REBEL YELL is qual parts demonic and elegant, her dark, industrial and hazy musical output takes the receiver to a fervent dance floor where everyone is sweating, possessed by heavy bass lines and mechanical spells.

The sonically boundless synth-punk / boogie / whatever project of Tāmaki Makaurau's Chris Cudby (Golden Axe), Power Nap's new album Dinosaurs is out soon via Sunreturn.

Christian Dimick is an artist and musician based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Their solo music explores improvisation over tape loops, with droning violin and vocals.
