Listen To SCRAN's Debut Album 'To Your Heart's Content'

Chris Cudby / Monday 19th February, 2024 1:38PM

Both a Tāmaki Makaurau supergroup of sorts and an urgent new post-punk proposition, SCRAN are the powerhouse six-piece of vocalist Lewis Yeats, guitarists Oscar Davies-Kay (Rackets, Water), Liam Pramm (For The Girl Who Has Everything, Short-Chain) and James King (Cindy, DHDFD’s), bassist Paul Brown (Trust Punks, Horror In Clay), and drummer Mason Fairey (Louisa Knicklin). Already local live favourites, SCRAN bust out barbed hooks in abundance on their debut album To Your Heart's Content. Punchy anthems including 'Reveal The Optimist', 'Primate Plan' and lead single 'Born Again' are sure to get crowds rowdy, but that's not the only weapon in their arsenal.

SCRAN shift with ease from riff-powered, ear-scraping dark energy to big-hearted yet bruised, lyrically poetic balladry across their record's no-fat-on-the-bone eight tracks. Frontman Yeats expresses impressive range, holding it all down with gruff raw-throated yowls (sometimes reminding this listener of The Stranglers) and charismatic croon, conveying moving emotional heft on 'Rent Is Due' and 'Inner Child'. SCRAN ought to be happy with what they've achieved on their sonically shaded first long player. Tuck in and head along to their release show this Saturday, with Swallow The Rat and Paul Cathro...
