Listen To Leonard Powell's Debut Album 'Slow Mover'

Getting married on a leap year is often believed to be unlucky, but I think releasing a record on a leap year day is the ultimate luck charm or middle finger to superstition. Leonard Powell (formerly known as hip hop artist Medium Pace) today shares his excellent debut album Slow Mover, self-released via Fake Fiancé Records — a record of lyrical ease and humour, tight instrumentation and serious comfort. Produced and mixed by Tom Broome (Tami Neilson, Home Brew, Aaradhna) over two years in his New Lynn studio, the long player is the culmination of Powell’s first big dip into live instrumentation. While Broome lends percussion to the project, listen out also for guest appearances from superpower (super-Powell?) friends like James Finlay (SOJØURN), Tom Taylor (Molly & the Chromatics, Cardinal Sleepdog), Silas McClintock (Silas Futura) and Jack Alexander (Short Rib).

Opener ‘Overaware’ is a charming and conversational track, as is ‘Parallel Parking Phobia’—“nowhere to park in the world’s most liveable city.” There’s also the youthful xylophone of ‘Age’, warm syncopation of ‘Adam’ and chordal highlights of ‘Irish Summer’. You’ll be able to zen out to Slow Mover at Tāmaki Makaurau’s The Wine Cellar very soon where Powell will play with full band, plus actress / dancer Liv Tennet will be opening with a debut solo show alongside partner Broome.
