Recorded at a Texas bordertown at Sonic Ranch Studios, Atlanta-born songwriter Faye Webster shares her latest album Underdressed at the Symphony — ten live-room recordings which permeate multiple genres to cross other borders: those of storytelling. Underdressed… came about from the artist’s impulsive decisions to merge with the crowd at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. It revels in the ambiguity of healing and intimacy, in Webster’s everyday musings and new beginnings. There’s her familiar pedal steel and string arrangements, but it’s the novel addition of the vocoder that paints an intoxicating blur of sensuality.

For the widely praised lead single ‘Lego Ring’, Webster recruited childhood friend, high school classmate and superstar rapper / producer Lil Yachty. The stretched vocals and tempo changes sweep the rug under your feet but prop you back onto a large couch. There’s a lot more to appreciate and get lost in the record: get absorbed by the lush piano and double guitars of opener ‘Thinking About You’, contradictory lyrics of ‘But Not Kiss’, deliberate spacing and repetition of ‘Lifetime’ and upbeat rock of ‘He Loves Me Yeah’. “Going to the symphony was almost like therapy for me. I was quite literally underdressed at the symphony because I would just decide at the last moment that that's what I wanted to do. I got to leave what I felt like was kind of a shitty time in my life and be in this different world for a minute. I liked that I didn’t feel like I belonged.”
