DARTZ Unleash New Album 'Dangerous Day To Be A Cold One'

Chris Cudby / Friday 1st March, 2024 9:47AM

It sure is a Dangerous Day To Be A Cold One, as the band from Wellington DARTZ have unleashed their second full length album of the same name, sending fans frothing and refrigerated beverages trembling across the motu. Out now via Flying Nun Records, at various times home to such Aotearoa songwriting greats as Martin Phillipps, Shayne P. Carter, Look Blue Go Purple and The Mint Chicks, the DARTZ team of Danz, Crispy, Rollyz and Clark Mathews make their own mark with ten fully amped punk-pop anthems recorded at Surgery Studio with production ace James Goldsmith.

While instantly catchy, DARTZ are in no way fooling around on DDTBACO. With the skills of a master satirist they lyrically confront issues including stolen land / the Treaty, socio-economic privilege, our dire rental situation, gentrification, pyramid schemes for suckers and middle class banality on 'Flat Inspection', 'Gender Reveal Burnout', 'Paradise', 'Get In On The Groundfloor', and the very pointed 'Mr. X'. Elsewhere DARTZ let their romantic side shine on 'Golden Hour', singing of the tender bond between father and son in 'Learning To Drive With Dad'.

Welcoming listeners on board for a crisp brew or two, then keeping us hooked with a literally non-stop barrage of cheerfully delivered yet devastatingly cutting one-liners (I laughed out loud at "what an original gag bro / so funny" in the title track), DARTZ's new opus sounds even more accomplished and straight up rockin' than their chart-topping 2022 debut. Do your duty and head along to their album release tour starting tonight at San Fran — every ticket presale includes a digital album purchase of DDTBACO...

“The four DARTZ boys are nothing but the most consummate professionals when it comes to the studio. A lot of acts come in to record and you’ll have a Ricky Bigshot in the band, ego inflated to the max and power tripping all over the place to the detriment of their own songs. But with DARTZ, it's nothing like that: these boys know nothing but the deepest, most caring and passionate love for each other, balanced with a disciplined and focussed dedication to their craft. It’s the most wholesome and beautiful thing in the world in my opinion - I wish that more people could see that tender side of them”. — producer James Goldsmith
