Sam Bambery Shares Single / Video 'The Burnout'

Samantha Cheong / C.C. / Thursday 28th March, 2024 11:21AM

Sam Bambery today shares his second single ‘The Burnout’ from the Ōtautahi songwriter's upcoming sophomore record Rubricator (out on 17th May via Under Underground Records, preorder it HERE). Just like the track itself, the new song's accompanying video is a soothing sheet of Egyptian cotton, with gentle bassy congas, plus offbeat Latin-style and slide guitar which subtly echo the relaxed vibes associated with festival season. Bambery self-directs the visuals of a thematic duality using Super 8 film, featuring Theo Tudor, Oscar Hartley, Phoenix Tumataroa and Toast. It’s a continuation of his own filmic explorations, in which he overlays his painting and animation antics. Next Thursday, Bambery and band will be supporting Blair Hollands' project El Hula at Wunderbar on the Christchurch leg of their Aotearoa tour — maybe you’ll get to hear some unreleased tunes…

“I love lyrically desolate and introspective songs, but also songs with this almost dissociative groove that makes you forget and tumble through emotions. We recorded this live, with some percussion and piano overdubs that enhanced the mood. Working with De Stevens on this one was a treat, I guess we understand the cliche of surf-psychedelia in Aotearoa’s rock music and wanted to turn it on it’s head a little bit.”
