Listen To Sam Bambery's New Single '24.01'
Ōtautahi’s Sam Bambery yesterday unveiled the final single from his upcoming record Rubricator (preorder it HERE for its 17th May release). Named after the date it was conceived in his Cantabrian home, '24.01' crystalised when he grabbed coffee with fellow songwriter friend Hannah Everingham, where their shared experiences of heartbreak gave space for collaborative lyrical magic and emotional release. Also featuring vocals by Juno Is, there’s a memorable two-chord motif, perhaps reflecting the back-and-forthness of heartache, while building instrumentation like jazzy piano and synths create intriguing timbre as time sweeps Bambery forward nonetheless.
I can’t wait for the rest of the album, where there’s some strange and genius noises from a broken drum kit and even a hot sauce bottle (in my mind this technique is called the Sriracha-cha slide). For one night only, Bambery is celebrating with an album release show at Space Academy in Christchurch alongside supports Jobs and Holly Kimber with a DJ set from Craigslist Soundsystem. Don't be the last to inscribe the show date onto your phone bricks, it's right below...
“This track I feel is a real mellow introduction to the album. Really it’s a lot of two chord motifs, so we endeavoured to try and make it as sonically interesting as possible when we were in the studio. Vibraphone, synth and ethereal vocals really set the mood for ‘Rubricator’ in my mind. It’s a sort of pop distillation moving into a buzzing array of textures. It’s a gentle introduction to the more dense approaches later on [in] the album.”
