Opener for NYC-based Aotearoa superstars Balu Brigada at Hollywood Avondale last August, Tāmaki Makaurau's Nat Hathaway (Masaya) gifts listeners a generosity of uplifting grooves on his debut solo album Hold Me. An absolute demon on the bass, Hathaway's flurries on the fretboard are boogie-inducing yet somehow silky smooth, while his songwriting sensibilities lean towards a reflective style of soul-pop — reminiscent to these ears of '70s / early '80 figures such as Chris Rainbow or perhaps Chaz Jankel, swirled in with contemporary influences like Tame Impala. Combined with sparkling washes of synth, club-friendly piano and playful sax it's a sophisticated combo.
