Black Milk Returning To New Zealand In June

Black Milk Returning To New Zealand In June

Chris Cudby / Thursday 16th May, 2024 9:49AM

No stranger to Aotearoa's stages, Detroit hip hop dynamo Black Milk is making a welcome return this winter, playing YOUR CRE-A-TOUR headline shows at Tāmaki Makaurau's Ponsonby Social Club and Pōneke's Valhalla in early June. Collaborator with such fellow stars as Danny Brown, J Dilla, Jack White, RZA, Royce da 5'9", Pharoahe Monch and local rap great Raiza Biza's knockout 2018 Black Hole Sun EP (a still underpraised release from this listener's perspective), Black Milk is back down under touring his new album Everybody Good?, featuring guest contributions from Mick Jenkins, Brandon Myster, Karriem Riggins, Raphael Saadiq, and Phonte. On his earlier visits Black Milk has been a festival favourite at Electric Avenue and Splore — don't miss him moving the crowd at the following dates, brought to you by Madcap and Low Key Source...

“This album is me searching for a sound I deem original, original to me. It’s the beginning of a new era of artistry for me, what it sounds like to create from a place of total freedom – freedom from boxes, opinions, fear.” — Black Milk

Press release:

Black Milk has been creating music professionally since he was a teen, co-producing for Detroit’s beloved Slum Village as well as crafting his own works as a producer and rapper; 15+ years later, he’s still going strong. Each step of the way, Black has pushed sonic boundaries — starting his career with a classic soul-sampled sound and evolving it into an opus of live instrumentation, chopped and re-worked into an original amalgamation of funk, soul, jazz, psych rock, gospel, electronic and hip-hop. One thing about Black is for sure — you never know what to expect from his next musical offering. Black’s new album, Everybody Good?, is true to his legacy of pushing boundaries and creating a truly unique work of art.

Everybody Good? features a legendary roster of greats, including Raphael Saadiq who produced “No Wish” featuring Phonte, and fellow Detroit producer Karriem Riggins who co-produced the instrumental track “Fews & Trues” along with Black.
