Arising from Tāmaki Makaurau's neo-gothic / electronic underbelly, Ex-Partner today unveils their audio-visual mini-epic Asylum Trilogy — directed by Damian Golfinopoulos (Grecco Romank), to be celebrated in style this Saturday at Whammy Backroom. Channeling the dark romantic spirit of Brandon Lee's The Crow, in Part One our rakish leather-clad protagonist sparks an unlikely love connection, filmed within the zoned sensory overload of Time Out and demolition derby fireworks. Humiliating skatepark violence opens our second chapter, setting Ex-Partner up for an emotionally tormented showdown with destiny.

This tragic yet relatable, immaculately executed goth-rock opera was brought to life in collaboration with a sprawling cast of contributors, including Hillary 'Billie' Fee (also of Grecco Romank) taking care of costume & makeup, Josh Harris-Harding on GFX and Job Club handling editing duties. "We tried to capture the romance and excitement of a ‘90s teen thriller but within a loosely defined contextual universe, allowing us to play with a bunch of cinematic tropes and modern gender stereotypes. Our vision of NEETs, Marvel fans, ingénues, hypermasculine alphas and their resulting dramas became slightly too large for one single track so we had to reconfigure it into a more operatic scale".
