Watch Louisa Nicklin & Band Covering Portishead's 'The Rip'
Boosting our suspicions there's a trip-hop revival of sorts emerging in Aotearoa (see also new tracks from Mousey and Wiri Donna), Louisa Nicklin covered a tune by leading figures of the blunted genre, Bristol's Portishead as part of a recent session for RNZ's NZ Live. Launching her second album The Big Sulk (produced by Shayne P. Carter) in late August with an accompanying release tour in September, the Tāmaki songwriter was joined in-studio by drummer David Harris, bassist Eamon Edmundson-Wells and Jasmine Balmer on guitar / noise table, filmed by Tosca Christie, Phoebe Driver, Kermath Davies, and Chelsea Nikkel — aka Taite Music Prize winner Princess Chelsea, who shares multiple live bandmates with Nicklin. Fitting the artist's moody avant-rock sensibilities like a velvet glove, experience immaculate footage of Nicklin and band playing Portishead's 'The Rip', plus squalling recent single 'Thick' and the luminous 'Sleep It Off', an ideal primer for her spring tour...
