Reef Brazendale & The Backstabbers Touring Nationwide
Having successfully bombarded Bandcamp with no less than four (update: five) releases in September and we're only halfway through — following the launch of his debut album I CAN'T FUCKING SLEEP! in June — it's time for Ōtautahi songwriting dynamo Reef Brazendale to show all of Aotearoa what he's got. Brazendale is embarking on a seven date nationwide tour with The Backstabbers, aka a bunch of buds on bass / drumming duties in various locations (including Tāmaki punk powerhouse Alex Ross Smith in the South Island).
Released yesterday and "recorded on my phone after a 2 day bender," new single 'BAD WEEK' illuminates the paradoxical reality of our contemporary political age: "Christopher Luxon's been making it hard to live / How is he the prime mister when all my drug fucked friends are smarter than him?" OUT OF GOOD SONGS conversely contains two good off the dome pop-punk rippers ('TBH' sounds particularly on-point). Brazendale's oh well! and Out of Luck! EPs succinctly express the overflowing emotional overload of "tooo many Double Browns" as a big catchy power-pop racket, and 17 SONGS I RECORED ON MY FRIENDS I PAD contains a generosity of DIY singalongs, amidst maybe a few dubious numbers (I'm looking at 'If i was a girl...'). The only way to know how Reef Brazendale whittles his already hefty songbook down to one live set is to catch him at the following gigs — starting this Friday at Ōtepoti's Inch Bar...
