Jim Nothing Shares New Album 'Grey Eyes, Grey Lynn'
Much like a suburban phantasia stretching out all around, yet melting through fingertips when we attempt to grasp it, Jim Nothing aka James Sullivan's new album Grey Eyes, Grey Lynn reminds this listener of the hazy lockdown days of just a few years ago, finding beauty while kicking about our own backyard. Recorded in the casual sonic spaces of Tāmaki Makaurau's Audio Foundation and Sullivan's own garage, we've already heard consistently excellent lead singles 'Raleigh Arena', 'Wildflowers', 'Easter at the RSC', 'Raleigh Arena', 'The Present' and 'Sundown Clown'. Seven new tunes complete the puzzle and they're equally strong — highlights include insta-catchy fuzz rock hit 'Lucky Charm', the hang 'n' fang motorik oomph of 'First Bite', the inquisitive singalong jangle of 'Can't Find It Now', and the Velvetsy grandeur of closing number 'The Pass'.
Sullivan co-produced the album with Brian Feary, whose talent for elevating "rock band" instrumentation is self-evident across the Melted Ice Cream back catalogue, like a Conny Plank of Ōtautahi guitar-pop. Real classics are being made right now in Aotearoa and Jim Nothing is making them, it's up to us to pause for a moment and recognise. Order the vinyl LP edition of Grey Eyes, Grey Lynn HERE and / or grab a copy from your friendly local record store, and head along to Saturday's launch show at Audio Foundation, with support from Fazed on a Pony...
