花溪 Flowerstream Unveil 'Low Key' EP
Finalists for the 2025 Best Independent Debut Award, 花溪 Flowerstream are the sonic travelling Chinese / Māori duo of Huiming Wu (playing home-engineered electric guzheng) and Maxwell Brown (on percussion and a variety of instrumentation), a must-experience live presence in Tāmaki Makaurau over the past few years. Instantly engulfing listeners in a universe of sculpted sound on their new Low Key EP, the pair mesh together on-a-dime, free-flowing improvisational passages (you can hear them exclaim "that was perfect" at the close of Bardo Pond-esque 'Hua') with delicately arranged song constructions — for example the pop-adjacent 'Daydreaming / Sleeptalking' — hinting at their live "fevered intense guzheng-doom" heaviosity with the gruffer textures of 'Snake, Ox. Earth'.
On a par with superb recent instrumental offerings from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and the new Clear Path Ensemble record, expressed in their own entrancing manner, get 花溪 Flowerstream's Low Key EP on your radar pronto and head along to Audio Foundation's release show tonight...
