Michael Llewellyn Shares New Album 'I'm Gorgeous' + Touring with French For Rabbits
Michael Llewellyn follows his songwriting muse into darkly poetic waters on the Te Whanganui-a-Tara artist's new studio album I'm Gorgeous, four years following his debut long player Oh My Darling. Armed with guitar, keys and solemn vocal talents recalling that of Leonard Cohen, Devonport hat enthusiast Finn Andrews, or maybe even Mark Sandman of Morphine, Llewellyn crafts moonlit ballads sparkling with deep feeling, romance and drama. He's also unafraid to inject some unvarnished rock heft when the occasion calls, like the electrified 'The Fish Song' plus the pleasingly crunchy lo-fi drum machine patter of 'Stalin'.
Laid down at Roundhead Studios with producer / mixer Paddy Hill and a crack team of bandmates — including vocalist Isabella Smith on a number of tunes and Avondale Intermediate Choir on sweeping closer 'Pray for Rain' — Llewellyn will be touring his shadowy creation nationwide this winter, joined for a clutch of dates by fellow windy city dwellers French For Rabbits. He'll be joined onstage by the I'm Gorgeous Band of Arran Cargill-Brown, Phoebe Johnson and Hikurangi Shaverian-Kaa, here are the details...
"It's an album in narrative form, an ever-swirling story about what it means to confront the many masks we find buried within our own reflection.
('Stalin' is) my favourite track on the record. Many of the other songs are dark and brooding… to me this song encapsulates the nervous excitement of new love".
