Operatic, ambitious and imaginatively orchestrated, Animal Reaction is the third collection of works from Ōtepoti composer, violinist, vocalist, and songwriter Calla of Ursa aka Calla Knudson. Seven carefully crafted miniatures in which organic and electronic worlds collide, the record's scope feels daringly maximal — "the album channels the fury of Mother Earth herself into a fierce call for justice" — considering feminist, environmental and mythical themes (and more) against a shapeshifting backdrop, self-produced with assistance from MISSY and Lola.

Calla Of Ursa's vocal powers in themselves are extraordinary, masterfully dramatic and theatrical on such standouts as 'Weather the Storm', 'Settle the Score', and the title track, while the speaker-pumping crescendo of 'Dead Run' feels akin to (perhaps a less malevolent) Grecco Romank.
