Listen to Gina Malcolm's Debut Album 'First Rodeo'
Leanne Malcolm has been a ubiquitous presence on Aotearoa's television and radio airwaves — including an iconic tenure as presenter of Nightline from 1995 to '98 — and in recent years she's been crafting majestic alt-country / Americana tunes as Gina Malcolm, using her middle name for her musical moniker. Based in Queenstown, Malcolm worked with multi award-winning Matt Joe Gow wearing his producer's hat, Tom Maxwell (Killergrams) and members of Canterbury's The Haunters (Adam Hattaway's trusty group) to make her debut album First Rodeo a rustic reality.
Maintaining a proud tradition of countrified southern song-craft (for example 2025 NZ Music Hall of Fame inductees The Warratahs), Malcolm's rich voice roams immense emotional landscapes and hushed moments of personal reflection. Unafraid to kick up a rock 'n' roll dust storm on soaring standout 'Traps', it's a safe bet Malcolm's album launch gig with her group The Hollow Souls at Tāmaki Makaurau's Big Fan will be a knockout next week. Grab the vinyl LP edition of Malcolm's accomplished debut from good record stores and head along...
“It’s been a journey, but one of the best times of my life. This is a very different Leanne Malcolm who used to read the news. I like being Gina, as it indicates my life has shifted in radical ways, and I’m not a one-trick pony. It’s taken courage to put myself out there, but life is all about courage, especially when you’re engaging your passion. It’s always been all about the music. I live for it.”
