Andrew Keoghan 'SPA' Album Release Concert Announced
Finalist for the 2012 Taite Music Prize for his debut album Arctic Tales Divide, and co-winner of Best Original Score at the 2024 New Zealand Television Awards for the Escaping Utopia original soundtrack (with Reb Fountain), Andrew Keoghan has announced the forthcoming launch of his new instrumental album SPA. The LA-based Aotearoa songwriter / composer is rightly marking this occasion with his first local headline date since 2017, joined at Tāmaki Makaurau's Pitt Street Methodist Church on 18th December by a veritable gaggle of fellow musical luminaries.
This exceedingly rare local performance by Keoghan will be the first opportunity for anyone to hear SPA, alongside a selection of his earlier works — officially releasing early next year, but punters can score the white vinyl LP edition at the show. Brought to you by Strange News, here's exactly what attendees can look forward to on the night...
"A string quartet, harp, and synthesizers will bring to life this work, which converges impressionist piano traditions with jazz harmony, electronic soundscapes, and shades of French orchestral pop. Cinematic in scope, SPA is a quietly immersive album that reveals its beauty through restraint, and the spacious elegance of its minimalism.
Keoghan will be joined on stage by an all-star ensemble, featuring bassist Cass Basil (Tiny Ruins), drummer Alistair Deverick (Lawrence Arabia), in-demand flute and saxophone legend J.Y Lee (Avantdale Bowling Club), angelic vocalist Rachel Clarke (Elisa), pianist Madeleine Xiao, and harpist Yoonseo Shin (Exploding Rainbow Orchestra). A very special string quartet will also appear, uniting the fabulous Jess Hindin, Peau Halapua, Crystal Lin, and Rachel Wells. And, as if that wasn’t enough to dazzle and delight, joining them all on stage is guest of honour Princess Chelsea, for what will be a transportive sonic and visual experience.
Finally, following the full performance of the SPA album, the group will play a selection of Andrew Keoghan’s previously released songs. He won’t leave you hanging. He’ll play the hits, and he’ll play them in style."
