Jolie Holland (USA) Christchurch Headline Show Announced

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 25th February, 2026 12:00PM

On the all-star bill for the Strange Universe boutique mega-festival in Tāmaki Makaurau next month, US folk luminary Jolie Holland is making the most of her visit to Aotearoa with a special headline performance at Space Academy in Ōtautahi on 17th March. A songwriter / poet whose esteemed ouevre includes nine long players and counting, Holland made a crucial contribution to Theia's 2025 debut album Girl, In A Savage World, duetting with the award-winning Aotearoa artist on ode to the power of sisterhood 'My Sister’s Hands In Mine'.

The Texan artist's latest record is Wolf Dispatch — a collection of Michael Hurley covers recorded with Californian tunesmith Max Knouse — and her 2023 album Haunted Mountain was created with Buck Meek of Big Star, who also released an album of his own with that same name that year. Catch Holland's brief local visit while you can...

Press release:

Jolie Holland is a poet and song crafter who has spent the last two decades carving out one of the most unique careers in American music. She uses experimental methods and avant-garde sonic textures to challenge listeners’ perceptions with her signature blend of folk, jazz, and blues across her acclaimed discography. Beginning with Catalpa (2002), self-released then later embraced by ANTI-Records, she followed it with Escondida (2004), Springtime Can Kill You (2006), The Living and the Dead (2008), Pint of Blood (2011), Wine Dark Sea (2014), and the collaborative Wildflower Blues (2017) with Samantha Parton.

Her latest LP, 2023’s Haunted Mountain, was created in collaboration with Buck Meek of Big Thief. The album, lauded by NPR as “a gorgeous, ghostly, bloody record,” continued her fearless exploration of love, loss, beauty, and the challenging circumstances of our times. With her smoky, spellbinding voice and unflinching lyrical honesty, Holland reckons with themes of dispossession, ecological grief, and resilience, offering songs that feel both intimate and universal.

She remains one of music’s most honest and boundary-pushing storytellers, crafting work that is earthbound yet otherworldly, political yet profoundly human.
