Moider Mother Unveil Final Album 'M E A T G A L A'

While most local groups tend to slink into the shadows with no public announcement when they call it quits, Moider Mother glam up for the occasion of their own unbirth with M E A T G A L A. An official send-off album for Ōtautahi's premier family band, who shocked fans a couple of weeks ago with news of their imminent demise — full statement and future projects together teased HERE — M E A T G A L A is a twelve track tapestry of sonic slaughter. Pitilessly piercing, political and pummelling as we have come to love from the trio of Hannah Harte, Nick Harte (Shocking Pinks) and Noah McKay, there is joy at the heart of these tunes, stitching together no wave thunk, doomy heaviosity, and teeth-gnashing punk venom like some kind of southern gothic Frankenstein.

While I am personally aghast I've never witnessed the majesty of Moider Mother in the flesh on stage, Canterbrians are advised to go through the tunnel to witness The Death Of Moider Mother at Lyttelton Coffee Company this Saturday. Taking the bull by the horns, they've invited some of Aotearoa's top musical voices to review M E A T G A L A. Here's an excerpt from 2023 Taite Music Prize winner Princess Chelsea's on-point observations (read the full version HERE):

"Nick Harte’s huge bass oozes thick, melty, fuzzed-out heaviness like lava across the lower frequencies, while Noah McKay’s percussion, conversely, is stark, dry, and intentional, carving out negative space Hannah fills with total authority.

Hannah can move from the subtle dynamics of spoken-word poetry, where each inflection tells a tale (‘Black Crucifix’), to something far more feral - not only matching John Cale at his most unhinged (maybe his most coked-out performance of ‘Fear Is a Man’s Best Friend’), but pushing beyond it into the sound of a literal possessed dinosaur (‘Hierarchy of Grottos’).

It’s a performance style driven by conviction rather than affect, and it lands with visceral impact. Menace, humour, and unease sit side by side, giving Meat Gala its pull." - Princess Chelsea
