Watch HINA's Video For New Single 'Coucou!'
An ever-rising force in Aotearoa songwriting, Amy Boroevich (Te Rarawa, Ngāti Raukawa) aka HINA has assembled a stellar team indeed for her new single and video 'Coucou!'. Produced by Navakatoa Tekela-Pule (Strangelove, LEAO and WAIWHAI., who were smashing onstage at last night's Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek show) at Roundhead Studios, and featuring James Milne (Lawrence Arabia, Half Hexagon) on bass, 'Coucou!' blends macaron-like lightness, multi-instrumental elegance and a touch of spaghetti western drama with weighty thematic centre — pondering “feeling deeply inadequate in ways that felt unfamiliar, thinking I was 'too' flawed, ‘too’ sensitive, 'too' unworldly, 'too much.'"
HINA self-directs and stars in the accompanying video made with support from NZ On Air, wearing a billowing gown in the back seat of vintage car, joined by horns maestro Finn Scholes (Carnivorous Plant Society) at her side. Recorded with seven-piece band and four-piece string ensemble, HINA’s debut album is due out later this year. You can catch HINA in duo mode this Wednesday at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammy Bar, teaming up with Finn Johansson and Band for Under The Arcade Presents...
"I wanted to play with the duality of the off-duty ballerina and the mariachi trumpeter. Performative femininity meets performative masculinity, masking insecurities in their own ways. They’re not on the stage, but the car isn’t a private space either. The characters never interact, almost unaware of each other’s presence, as if in a dream. It’s a semi-surreal exploration of the uncertainty of falling in love and the emotional tightrope of chasing perfection."
