HINE Shares Debut EP 'KA MUA KA MURI'

Welcomed into the world with a release day event at Big Fan in Tāmaki Makaurau on Saturday, KA MUA KA MURI is the years in the making debut EP from HINE, aka Ōtaki multi-instrumentalist / songwriter Gigi Crayford (Kahungunu, Tūwharetoa, Raukawa). Recorded with family members Miles Crayford and Greg Crayford, alongside Charlie Budd and Aslan Rowlands, KA MUA KA MURI bridges sonic worlds of taonga pūoro and jazz-folk songcraft, sung in both te reo Māori and English.

A five waiata cycle which emerged from "learning te reo Māori in full immersion at Te Wānanga O Raukawa and tracing the threads of ancestry", the collection features "songs for different Atua Wahine including Hinetakurua, Hine Raukatauri, Hinemoana, Hine Nui te Pō / Murirangawhenua & Papatūānuku." Including earlier singles 'OVER THE BONES' and the title track, KA MUA KA MURI opens with 'Hinetakurua', a deeply soulful prog-rock-fusion voyage spanning more than ten minutes, while new tunes 'Arahina Mai' and 'E Rere Apahau' spread wings into contemplative folk and chamber pop realms.
