Launched a week and bit ago, this frigid winter Wednesday is the perfect time to warm up your ears with 'It's getting hotti', a new waiata from Greatsouth aka Papakura innovator Payton Taplin (Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa). Swirling together dream-pop ambience, taonga pūoro reverberations and radiant indie-rock jangle, 'It's getting hotti' is a gently-paced song of resistance, embodying "everyday people, whānau and the local community still fighting the good fight."

Playing a launch party for his imminent new album Hellhole of The Pacific at Big Fan with friends on 21st August — doubling as a fundraiser for his showcase performances at Bigsound in Brisbane — Greatsouth is also on the all-star bill for Going Global festival the following week. "Grounded in kaitiakitanga, this waiata reflects on protecting the whenua and recognising indigenous rights and tino rangatiratanga. It personifies Te Manukanuka o Hoturoa, the Manukau Harbour, as a whaea figure, asking listeners to slow down, look out over te taiao and care for the land and sea that care for us.

At the same time, It's getting hotti speaks to the tension between wanting to live by those values and the day- to-day pressure of making ends meet, feeding whānau and keeping up with work, community and responsibility.

The 'resistance' in the song is not distant or abstract. It is everyday people, whānau and the local community still fighting the good fight.
