Arch Hill Recordings Celebrate 15th Anniversary

Arch Hill Recordings Celebrate 15th Anniversary

Thursday 17th April, 2014 9:43AM

To mark an impressive 15 years in the business, Arch Hill Recordings is holding a special show that will include performances from Don McGlashan, Street Chant, Tiny Ruins, Transistors and more. Arch Hill Recordings as a label was born back in 1998 out of Auckland's Arch Hill Studios, which was used by a bunch of local artists to record their music.

The first Arch Hill release was in 1999 from David Mulcahy (Paul Sartre Experience, Superette), which was followed by Lanky and Fang the next year. Since that time, the catalogue has grown to include more than 50 albums and EPs, encompassing diverse artists such as Bailterspace, The Clean, Luke Buda, Panda Bear and Boxcar Guitars.

The anniversary party is part of the just announced Becks Sets Series that includes a run of shows around the country during May. Here are the details...

Arch Hill Recordings, the label, was born out of a studio called Arch Hill Studios, based on Auckland New Zealand's Great North Rd. In late 1998 a bunch of musicians who had all had previous connections with one another were all recording at the studio. Those ensconced in projects at Arch Hill Studios included David Mulcahy (previously in Flying Nun bands the Jean Paul Sartre Experience and Superette), Ben Howe and Greta Anderson (also previously in Superette) and Jim Laing (previously in the Jean Paul Sartre Experience). This resulted in the first Arch Hill release by David Mulcahy in 1999, followed the next year byLanky and Fang.

Since then the catalog has grown to over 50 albums and EPs. Some of these were recorded by highly regarded established artists, like Don McGlashan, David Kilgour, The Bats, Luke Buda, Bailterspace and The Clean, while others have been from newer and younger acts including Street Chant, Doprah, Surf City, Ghost Wave, Transistors and Tiny Ruins.

15 years down the track sees Arch Hill still going strong, working alongside and in partnership with Flying Nun Records, Flying Out, St Jerome's Laneway Festival,Aeroplane Music and Mystery Girl Presents. On the horizon are releases by Tiny Ruins, Doprah and more. Continuing on with a 'music first' philosophy Arch Hill are looking forward to the next 15 years!
