PRESS RELEASE:
HOW TO DRESS WELL ANNOUNCED FOR ONE AUCKLAND PERFORMANCE
Robin Fernando and 95Bfm are delighted to bring to New Zealand audiences the haunting neo-soul sensibility of widely respected experimental R&B / pop crooner and producer Tom Krell, more generally known as How To Dress Well, for one show on 21 January 2015 at Auckland’s King’s Arms.
Over the course of just five years and three albums, Chicago-raised Krell has established himself as one of the most influential and interesting figures in contemporary experimental pop. After the success of 2010’s Love Remains and the critically acclaimed Total Loss in 2012, A new How To Dress Well record has become something of an event in the blogosphere, and his recent output Where Is This Heart? is no different. Written mostly on the road and recorded in Berlin with co-producer Rodaidh Mcdonald in the height of summer 2013, the album explores a new variety of production choices for Krell and further solidifies his status as one of experimental pop’s contemporary auteurs. Hailed by Pitchfork as a ‘modern masterpiece… conducted with the most eternal transparency’, Krell’s music continues to be incredibly universal in its questioning of deeply personal experiences; namely love and pain.
But Krell is no navel gazer. When it comes to the live show, he is an engaging and passionate performer, injecting his set of love-drenched jams with humour and endearing self-deprecation. Expect to be moved, both emotionally and literally -- by the end of the set he’ll have you dancing with the myriad fans he’s accumulated over a brief period of prolific output and steady live shows.
Drawing influence from such diverse sources as Spiritualized, Lou Reed, Prince, Everything but the Girl, and PM Dawn, Krell takes songwriting seriously. As the album title suggests, he explores the large and rather tricky matters of the heart and human emotion for his subject matter, his sensual but sincere voice backdropped by his ever-surprising production choices. ‘I’ve always believed that in the deepest part of each of our hearts’, says Krell, ‘we are actually as close as possible to what is universally human’. This is a rare chance to see How To Dress Well, one of alt-pop’s finest, bare his heart and soul on stage. We’re all in this together -- don’t be the one to miss out.
