St Vincent Awarded Grammy For Best Alternative Album 2015

Tuesday 10th February, 2015 11:12AM

Art-rock darling St Vincent was announced as the winner of the Grammy for Best Alternative Rock Album last night in a ceremony held at in Los Angeles, for her stunning self-titled fourth studio album. The multi-talented musician, who played a fantastic show in Auckland late last month for Laneway Festival, is still in Australia having just wrapped up the last shows of the Laneway series over the weekend in Melbourne and Freemantle, respectively. The New York-based shredder, whose real name is Annie Clark, told Pitchfork she found out about her win at 7am with a text from her mom simply reading: "Annie won!", and then celebrated with a shower and a "coffee with cocoa". She said the gramaphone-shaped trophy would probably take pride of place at her mum's house "on her piano next to the childhood photos of everyone".

St Vincent is the first female artist to win in the category since Sinead O'Connor was awarded the grammy (when it was known as Best Alternative Music Performance) for her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, which she subsequently refused to accept. Clark beat out Arcade Fire, Jack White, Alt-J, and Cage the Elephant to take this year's award. In a surprising move, the winner of Album Of The Year was Beck for his record Morning Phase, and perhaps slightly less suprisingly Aphex Twin took the trophy for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Syro.
