Yep, it’s that time of year already. New Zealand Music Month is upon us and once again we’re taking the opportunity to dig up some great local releases from years gone by to share with you over the next four weeks.

The 10th anniversary vinyl re-release of The Mint Chicks' pivotal debut album Fuck The Golden Youth last month inspired this year's theme, which will see us celebrating other noteworthy local records turning the big 1-0 this year, starting with the self-titled debut album from one of the country’s foremost live acts, Die! Die! Die!.

Formed in Dunedin in late 2003 by core members Andrew Wilson (vocals, guitar) and Michael Prain (drums), Die! Die! Die! forged a distinctive sound, an abrasive and minimalist brand of punk that quickly pricked up ears. In early 2005 the three-piece (which at the time included bassist Henry Oliver) found themselves in a Chicago studio to record over three days with the legendary Steve Albini, whose long, long list of credits includes the likes of Nirvana, Pixies and Slint. The record then got the mastering treatment from Steve Rooke at Abbey Road Studios and the resulting 10-track record was unveiled New Zealand and Australia in September 2005. It later saw release in the States in 2006 and the United Kingdom in 2007.

The angsty debut set the trio in good stead and today they are still going strong (these days with bassist Michael Logie), having released their fifth full-length album, S W I M last yearBut they still regularly drop early singles 'Auckland Is Burning', 'Ashtray Ashtray' and 'Shyness Will Get You Nowhere' into their live sets.

Die! Die! Die!
came out in a time when online streaming wasn't really a thing, so we present it now for your listening pleasure...

With thanks to Die! Die! Die!
