NZIFF Announce Music Documentaries For 2015 Festival

Thursday 4th June, 2015 11:01AM

Ahead of releasing the full programme, the New Zealand International Film Festival has revealed four amazing music films as part of this year's schedule. Leading the charge is Amy, a documentary about embattled British soul singer Amy Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011. Directed by Asif Kapadia the film premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival last month and was heralded as being "unmissable" and a "tragic masterpiece".

Also coming to the festival is Mavis!, a feature-length documentary about gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, the Staple Singers. In addition, festival-goers will be treated to screenings of Lambert & Stamp, a candid and entertaining story about the rise of English rock-n-roll outfit The Who. Furthermore, From Scotland with Love will be screening at the festival. A collaboration between ex-pat New Zealand director Virginia Heath and prolific Scottish indie folksinger King Creosote, the documentary was created purely from archive film material from the National Library of Scotland and Scottish Screen Archive, and instead of dialogue it features only soundtracking provided by Creosote.

The NZIFF still has a few musical films up its sleeve to be revealed when the full programme drops at the end of the month.
