Tom Rodwell - The Mystery of the Juke Joint
Saturday 27th July 2019
8pm
Expect greasy slices of rent party blues & boogie from singer-guitarist Tom Rodwell, at Grey Lynn institution Freida Margolis on Saturday 27th July, music from the era of the juke joint - the sweltering crucible of rhythm & blues, when foot-stomping rhythms ruled the roost. Rodwell will be wheeling out his favourite low-rent funky hits & misses from the likes of John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy, Skip James, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson, and Hound Dog Taylor.
“Sheffield’s answer to Lightnin’ Hopkins,” (NME), Tom Rodwell has toured extensively in Europe, the US and New Zealand, and has recently been seen in action in support of Cha-Wa, Cedric Burnside, Lonnie Holley, Jerrod Blind Boy Paxton, Otis Taylor, Leon Russell and Kitty, Daisy and Lewis. As session man, he’s worked with Don McGlashan, contributing to his recent top 10 “Lucky Stars” album, and as producer was responsible for the acclaimed “Old Haunts” LP by Coco Davis.
