This October and November Ha the Unclear are taking a twirl around the country with a fresh set, playing some favourites and incorporating new songs with curious titles like ‘(We’re gonna die in a) Rented House’, ‘No Lemons in the Lemonade’, and 'Even Artichokes Have Hearts (So Why Don't You?).

Last year the band released the ‘Threads’ EP featuring the single ‘Strangers’ and the Sylvia Massy/Tom Healy produced ‘Julius Caesar’. With wider re-releases soon to set sail via label Think Zik, a flurry of writing over the winter months has the band all fizzed up to share the stage.

Context:

Ha the Unclear’s distinctive body of work oscillates between explication and obscuration, in the liminal space of non-sense and new knowledge. While their discography runs the full gamut of gears from indie screamers to gutter-pop and veiled treasures, live performances are a spirited distillation of upbeat melancholy bangers.

Originating in the Gothic harbour town of Ōtepoti/Dunedin, early on the band moved away to pick basil in the Bay of Plenty before landing in the Auckland music scene and expanding their cardboard box bedroom routine into a more fully realised indie ensemble. It’s with this that they jettisoned their lo-fi, sprawling Guided by Voices-esque early string of releases in favour of more focused studio albums in 2014’s ‘Bacterium (Look at Your Motor Go)’, 2018’s ‘Invisible Lines’, and the ‘Threads’ EP in 2020.
