Baile funk has recently exploded across global airwaves, but RIO FUNK has been holding it down in Aotearoa since 2013. Powered by our vibrant Brazilian community—and now embraced by Auckland’s wider creative scene—locals, artists, music lovers, and cultural curators alike—RIO FUNK has become a staple in Tāmaki Makaurau’s nightlife.

A Note from Marjorie Sinclair (Founder & Creator of RIO FUNK)

I’m Marjorie Sinclair—a proud Brazilian and queer music curator, and the founder of RIO FUNK, New Zealand’s first and longest-running baile funk event. Over the past 16 years, I’ve had the privilege of reshaping Aotearoa’s music scene—introducing the bold sounds of Brazil and championing inclusive spaces for queer, female, and minority artists.

I’ve had the honour of playing and collaborating at festivals like Splore, Sonorous, Highlife, and Auckland Pride, and sharing the stage with Brazilian icons including Marcelo D2, Black Alien, Gabriel o Pensador, Armandinho, Rael, and many more.

I’ll be behind the decks at this next RIO FUNK, bringing a full-spectrum set—packed with fresh baile funk, iconic classics, and some wild, gringo-friendly remixes to ignite the dancefloor and honour the roots of the baile funk culture.
