The versatility and rhythmic drive of double bassist Alistair McLeod combines with the subtle tonal palette of Ian Logan on acoustic piano (a classic Lipp upright from the 1920's) for two sets of the blues as part of the 2025 Wellington Jazz Festival. They will cover a spectrum of blues styles in this artistic venue just across the road from the sea in Island Bay and looking out on Taputeranga Island.
Out of the huge array of music radiating out of the blues they've picked out some of their favourites: all linked by the 'unplugged' and lyrical soundscape that works so well in Studio Te Mapunga. Expect not only the classic 12 bar form but also a selection of jazz standards evoking the spirit if not the exact form: for example Billie Holiday made this territory her own in such standards as 'Don't Explain'. A special feature will be the art exhibition on the walls at the same time called Out of the blues. It will feature work - amongst others - by Neal Palmer (an early mover behind the Jazz Festival) and Ian Logan. There will even be a blues-themed selection of refreshments during the break.
