The Undercurrent presents Rust Your Mind Away!
Evie Patterson's grandpa (John Patterson) was a poet who published books filled entirely with four stanza poems, with four lines in each stanza, made up of four words with four letters each. After reading his books, Evie formed an understanding of his way of expression without really ever getting to know him, and from there created a musical concept inspired by it. This year will be 10 years since he passed, and before Evie leaves Aotearoa (to attend music school in Verona, Italy) she would love to celebrate his life by performing this music in tribute to him.
For this performance, Evie has written a four movement jazz suite for four musicians that together would run for around an hour. The music draws influence from Mingus, Pharoah Sanders, Linda May Han Oh, Ravel, Melissa Aldana, Alice Coltrane and Eric Dolphy.
Evie Patterson will be on saxophone, John Rae on drums, Theo Thompson on guitar and Daniel Yeabsley on bass.
