The Otherworld: Traditional tunes & stories for Matariki - Cancelled

Ōmiha Folk Club is waking up from its winter hibernation for a midwinter gathering of traditional tunes and storytelling in the spirit of Matariki. Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster. Its reappearance in the midwinter dawn sky marks the beginning of the Māori New Year, Te Mātahi o te Tau. It is a time of year dedicated to remembering the past, celebrating the present and looking to the future.

We are excited to welcome to the folk club Irish traditional tunes group The Otherworld, led by storyteller and musician Mark Russell. The group will share a set of traditional Irish folk tunes performed on tin whistle, uilleann pipes, mandolin and guitar that will journey from spirited jigs and reels to meditative airs, interspersed with retellings of traditional tales, rememberings and lore.

Around the world, midwinter marks a time of reflection, remembering and reconnecting to one's roots, and we would love to invite you to share a song, story or yarn from your own cultural heritage or your family's journey. **Floor spots are limited as despite having some pretty mystical folks on the team, sadly none of us are able to bend time.**
