Beyond Music - Special Interest Night
A series of short presentations from some of our fave Darkroom regulars about what they get up to beyond making music & attending gigs here!
Darkroom's music community is a wonderfully diverse and interesting group of people. We love hearing snippets of everyone's lives when you're at our venue, and want to give folks an opportunity to talk about their hobbies, studies, work, art and interests beyond their time spent here!
Our guest speakers and topics are:
The NZ Praying Mantis - George Gibbs
Wind Farms - Logan Cane
Fossil Crabs - Guin Knight
Trading Cards - Karleshia Wills
Each presenter will deliver a short 15-20min presentation featuring a slide show, physical props, loads of fun facts, and some laughs along the way!
LOGAN CANE - WIND FARMS
Logan works helping to design the electricity grid for our country's power supply. One of his and specialisations is in designing windfarms. He is currently working designing Mt Cass Windfarm in North Canterbury, which will eventually generate enough electricity for 40,000 homes. Logan also frequents the Darkroom stage with his band, Guideless, who play melodic indie rock laced with a touch of psych and a hint of surf.
KARLESHIA WILLS - TRADING CARDS
Karleshia will talk about their obsession with trading card games, which they describe as their bread and butter. Karleshia will host a short Q and A about, and open packs on stage for the lols. Outside of trading card games, Karleshia works in marketing and design, and is a regular in the audience at Darkroom supporting other artists, as well as often performing their own ambient, emotionally-driven music, which blurs the lines between indie, alternative and atmospheric.
GUIN KNIGHT - FOSSIL CRABS
Darkroom regular Guin is often found at our monthly quiz night, as well as in the audience supporting our city's latest up-and-coming indie bands. For their presentation, Guin will talk about fossil crab hunting! Guin finds, collects, and uses tools to prepare the specimens for display We'll hear about how the fossils form, tips for finding them, as well as see some examples of some of the coolest ones Guin has found so far!
GEORGE GIBBS - THE NZ PRAYING MANTIS
George will talk about his Masters research, which involves collecting specimens of the New Zealand praying mantis from across the country, extracting their DNA and recording their morphology. His studies also look into the Māori history of the praying mantis in New Zealand to see if there could be cultural support for it being here before Europeans. George Gibbs is well-loved within the Darkroom community for their friendly and passionate presence at our monthly quiz nights. Full of fun facts and often arriving with freshly made baking to share with all the quiz teams, George even has a special t-shirt proclaiming them as the smartest archivist in Darkroom.
