As part of our spotlight on the Pressure To Be – 18 and Under NZ compilation released last week via Papaiti Records we caught up with Auckland’s Grass Cannons who contributed their track “Antarctica #2” to the album.

When/how did the band start out?

Halfway through this year Joe heard one of the demos I recorded and suggested we made it a legitimate band with Paul and Alessandra.

Where are you based?

AKL

Current line-up?

Alex, Joe, Alessandra, Paul

What other bands/projects have you been involved in?

Nice Birds, Body 125, Moron Says What?!, Nevernudes, Wilberforces…

JOHN KEY’S DAUGHTER.

How would you describe your sound?

P u s s y N o i s e .

What are you listening to at the moment?

Television + Emeralds

What is your writing/recording process?

Usually I turn up to practice with a basic skeleton of a song where Joe and Paul then flesh out the riffs I write and make them 10x better. Alessandra hits some drums. Then I wail.

Challenges?

Joe and Alessandra semi-broke up. AWK.

Do you have any releases out or on the way? Tell us more…

Nah, unfortunately. We recorded some tracks with our friend in his basement but they turned out like none of us expected. Although we had no particular idea of what we wanted. I would like to record an album over the summer though.

Favourite venues so far?

Bars suck. Houses rule.

What’s the best concert you have ever been to?

Pavement.

Best or most memorable gig you have played?

w/ Die! Die! Die! + Ghost Wave in a warehouse.

If you could open for anyone, who would it be?

Ghost Wave.

Most overrated band at the moment?

Jens Lekman.

Most underrated band at the moment?

Coate are a band from Christchurch who have only released one song which I find myself listening to almost religiously. Daily basis etc. Apparently they have an EP coming out soon which I am KEEN 4.

The state of music in NZ is…

Pretty ok despite the existence of numerous inflated egos.
