The Chills live in Auckland - Pink Frost 25th Anniversary Show

The Chills live in Auckland - Pink Frost 25th Anniversary Show

Tuesday 19th May, 2009 12:00PM

Hot on the Heels of NZ Music Month seminal Dunedin band The Chills are pleased to announce a special one-off Auckland show to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the single Pink Frost.

The Chills recorded Pink Frost at The Lab studios in Auckland on 29 May 1982 with additional tracking and mixing in January 1984, the single finally seeing the light of day in June 1984.

Fast forward to 2009: Martin and the band decide a special one-off show was appropriate to mark the anniversary, as well as showcasing one of the strongest ever live Chills line ups.

Martin comments:
"There has been a lot of commentary in the international media of late regarding The Chills and I felt it was both appropriate and good timing to do something a little special to recognize the impact this song has had both on the fans and the acts who are now name checking us as influential in their lives. It is really gratifying to know we have made and continue to make some small difference.

The Chills play Auckland on Friday June 12
Montecristo Room
53 Nelson Street
Auckland NZ.
Presales $25 + B/F
Tickets available from Undertheradar.co.nz

The Chills will be playing a tight, driven set that is reflected in the overall stability of the line up in recent years. There are a couple new songs that have been in embryonic stages over the last years and these will see the light of day along with the current line-ups interpretations of some of the more obscure Chills catalogue and of course the timeless numbers that still ring in your head days after they have been played.

Martin Comments:

"The Chills have always been and continue to be a lifes work for me - the enduring nature of our songs is at once intriguing and also gives us a great deal of pleasure when we perform live. Writing and striving for some form of pop perfection is both a gift and a burden and one I do not take lightly. It is with much happiness that I can bring the band to Auckland after too long a break away so that people can immerse themselves in the live experience that is The Chills - Not simply as a greatest hits retro package but as an ongoing creative endeavour."

Recent accolades have come from far and wide and with The Chills being recently referred in to twice in the UK Guardian, featuring on German tribute albums, and with bootleg live recordings cropping up on a regular basis. A live recording of the band playing at Auckland's Reverb Room in May 1982 is about to be featured on the Radio One 25th anniversary album release. There are plans underway for a documentary film and finally the plethora of band ephemera and amazing Chills factoids are about to see the light of day via a new Chills website.

Anchor Butter isnt the only export the English "dont get" and when asked recently by an English Music writer about why New Zealand's 1980s music scene, one of the most fertile and imaginative in the world, was all but ignored in Britain, Martin replied "There's something about the antipodes that irritates Britain. We are those of you brave enough to jump on to rickety little boats, head off into darkened seas, and to set up brave new colonies because we didn't want to be a part of your class system. Continuing to celebrate the independence of that scene in NZ is just one of our ways of keeping intact an important part of what those courageous journeys were originally about"
