A Low Hum June - The Sneaks, Shaky Hands and Thought Creature

A Low Hum June - The Sneaks, Shaky Hands and Thought Creature

Thursday 8th June, 2006 2:29PM
“This is our time to dance”

Kevin Bacon is a wise man and I've taken his advice in my choice for this months tour buddies.

I'm taking a month off from this whole touring shenanigans in July, so I figured I may as well take the three most intensely dance-a-riffic bands in the country on tour in June so people had some time to recuperate and repair their worn out shoes over Winter.

If you're at a party and its dead, what you need to do is find a big searchlight, put a cutout image of a robot over that searchlight and shine it into the sky. Outside the city in their hilltop manor this call for help will be seen by The Sneaks who will at once rescue your ass ‘cause they always know hoe to get the party started. Maybe you saw The Sneaks tear it up at Big Day Out, maybe you've seen their choice new video for “Kuzai Heart you Girl” on TV, maybe you saw lead singer James walking along the street and then hid behind a lamppost giggling like a little girl, maybe you got a copy of their EP/mini-album thing “You All Suck”, maybe you got their last two videos on the two A LOW HUM DVDs, but whatever it is you maybe got, what you definitely got is a party like no other, brother.

What do Amina (Sigur Ros's Orchestra), The Walkmen, Four Tet and The Dears have in common? Well as of last week, they are all label mates with Auckland 's manic Shaky Hands. Yup. You heard it here first. Shaky Hands are gonna release their awesome new EP on the raddest label in Australasia , Speak'n'Spell Records . The EP “ Cut off your hands” is damn choice and this tour doubles as the release tour for it. Sounding kinda like if The Buzzcocks and Gang of Four got all romantic and then had a child with Attention Deficit Disorder who couldn't stop jumping off things and hanging from the rafters. Shaky Hands are post-disco-punk-pre-rock-post-pop that will make your handheld disco meter explode. If Shaky Hands get all up in your face, just slap ‘em.

So having gone through the S section of the record store, I moved on to the T 's and found the most un-catergorizable band in the land Thought Creature. I almost didn't take Thought Creature on tour ‘cause I can just see all the problems now… as an old man pokes his head in the door of the venue “So, whats all this about eh? What do the bands sound like”… and I'd just stand their stammering, “uh…well, Thought Creature sound kinda like a swamp, no.. surf, but not surf music at all, uh… rock, but no... not rock, umm… punk? New wave? Grunge? Slightly Psychedelic? Just get in there and dance old man!

If you're feeling blue this winter, get on down to the Low Hum show near you for a dance fest that will warm you right up.
