THIS WEEK’S NZ MUSIC MONTH HIGHLIGHTS It is Monday 21st of May - Day #21 of NZ Music Month 2007!

Today a brand new music site went live! www.lovemusic.co.nz
will provide a ‘one stop shop’ where music, service and hardware providers can advertise their latest product or news, and have portals to their online service. It will also provide online education for all things digital-music-wise for newcomers, youth, parents, schools and teachers. This website is part of the wider anti-piracy strategy at RIANZ which seeks to educate consumers to buy and play legal music and therefore grow the digital music market in New Zealand.

This week the bNets get into the swing of things with radio stations 95bFM, RDU, Radio One, The Most and Control all playing no less than 15 sets by local artists. Tune in at 9am, 3pm and 5pm to hear sets by The Sneaks, Dick Johnson, Cut Off Your Hands, The Brunettes, White Swan Black Swan, The Unscene, Phelps and Munro, Punches, Bulletproof, SJD, The Haints of Dean Hall, The Tornadoes, Hollie Smith, Che Fu and The Defendents.

Wellington’s Radio Active is also celebrating the month by broadcasting 100% NZ goodness and its own set of live-to-airs by The Livids, Tommy Ill, Raashi Malik and Band, Adi Dick, Homefire Burning, and Fighting the Shakes, with more hitting the airwaves next week.

Today P-Money releases his 4th album P-Money: Unreleased Joints & Remixes. Its a compilation of remix work and rare collaborations that have been produced over the past two years, including tracks with legends of local music Mr. Dave Dobbyn & Che Fu; newcomers PNC & Nikki Montana and international guests such as Mystro (UK), 1200 Techniques (AUS) and Krondon (USA). Check it out…

This Thursday and Friday 95bFM are hosting a NZ Music Month showcase ‘Fancy New Band’. It is FREE and happening at the Kings Arms from 6.30pm. Pop along to check out The Artisan Guns, The Wicks, Kittyhawk, White Birds and Lemons, Flick, The Bengal Lights, Kill Surf City, Phony Bone, and Infinite Flying Kick - and that’s just Thursday! Friday continues with a stellar line up of bands such as International Flannel, The Bonnie Scarlets, The Coshercot Honeys, Collapsing Cities, The DHDFD’s, The Vietnam War, Fight the Shakes and Holiday with Friends… phew.

Also on Thursday night Christopher Blake premieres his work as part of the APN News & Media Premier Series Concert 5 – The Majesty of Brahms, Thurs 24 May, 8pm, Auckland Town Hall.

Heading down to Greymouth and it’s the GIG '07 Open Music Forum this Saturday night. A big day out with music industry guests, bands all day, performance workshops, music quiz and more! Registrations open from 10.30am at Tai Poutini Polytechnic.

Also this Saturday night Zillionstars presents a variety of handpicked acts including Blackbird, Charlie Ash, Coshercot Honeys, Whitebirds & Lemons, Electric Confectionaires plus special guests DJ Automatic and Clarke Gayford. Hosted by Sarge fresh from Queenstown the party strives to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes, a life-long disease effecting around 11,000 New Zealanders. In addition GOOD designer Lillie Toogood will dress some of the musicians and limited edition Zillionstars GOOD merchandise will be on sale.

Another worthy cause is the Starship Rocks gig this Friday night with The Rock and Roll Machine, Revolver, Disco de Soto and Jonnie Rose. It is happening at Galatos and proceeds go to the Starship Hospital.

If you haven't got out and supported some local hip-hop this month then I think you'd better make an appearance at the Breakin' Wreckwordz 5th Birthday Party. Yup, on the 25th May they will be celebrating five years since the conception of the envelope pushing indie hip hop label. The whole crew (Usual Suspects, Cyphanetik, Louie Knuxx, Red Eye Society, Ethical, & Tourettes) will be squeezing onto one stage at Auckland's Rising Sun to deliver a classic set. This will be the first time the entire crew will be together for one show.

This Saturday night Dudley Benson has prepared a striking ensemble of string quartet, organ and four part choir for the glorious St. Mathews-in-the-City, second-to-none in acoustics and atmosphere.

And heading over a rather large stretch of water called the Tasman Sea, Melbourne is hosting its very own NZ Music Month! This Thursday Rhombus hit the East Brunswick Club, Friday Shapeshifter and Solaa crank it at the Prince of Wales, then there is the grand closing party with Nomad and Kolab at Miss Libertines on the Sunday.

Yup, it’s another busy old Music Month. Check out www.nzmusicmonth.co.nz
for a complete list of gigs.
