An Audience with the Devil 6

An Audience with the Devil is New Zealand's premier festival of metal.

First beginning in 2003, the event has showcased some of the best extreme local and international metal bands to an increasingly bloodthirsty and avaricious audience and has gone on to become one of the largest and most recognized underground metal festivals in Australasia. Now in its sixth yearly incarnation, An Audience with the Devil once more brings two pulsating nights of the most extreme music in the world to the City of Sails, and the 2008 line-up promises to be more savagely dark and horrifying than any before it.

Headlining proceedings is uber-controversial black metal band MAYHEM. An infamous icon of musical pop culture; the band from Norway's dark, frozen north solidified themselves as one of the most despised acts in world music when they were implicated in a raft of church burnings in their native country, as well as engaging in a heated conflict with fellow black metal outfit Burzum - a conflict which left Mayhem's guitarist fatally stabbed and their lead singer dead from a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the head. Fifteen years on from these grisly events, and Mayhem continue to be held by most in the mainstream music industry in a less than reverent light. Touring in support of their latest offering Ordo Ad Chao; the band's first visit to New Zealand shores features what is considered by most to be the bands strongest line-up: Attila, Necrobutcher, Blasphemer and Hellhammer.

In recent times, the metal scenes in Australia and New Zealand have become intimately close; with a mutual respect and exchange of talent fostering a strong consolidation of two of the worlds emerging metal markets. With a number of Kiwi acts having played the recent Metalstock Festival in Sydney, it is now time for the Anzac spirit to be repaid in kind; with Tasmanian alternative death metallers PSYCROPTIC, Sydney black metal legends NAZXUL and blackended death tyrants RUINS all making the trans-ditch journey to perform at An Audience with the Devil 6.

Rounding off this years' line-up is a strong contingent of among the best New Zealand metal has to offer; with world exports DAWN OF AZAZEL and ULCERATE joining Aucklanders SINATE, FORCED TO SUBMIT and VASSAFOR, Wellingtonians ORNITHOLOGIST, MAGNUM OPUS and AETHEA, and Cantabrians VIXEN EXECUTION. An Audience with the Devil has always prided itself in showcasing the best among New Zealand's heavy talent, and edition number six promises to be no different with a rich feast of different metal subgenres from Aotearoa's dark shores all coming together under one roof over two nights.
