Popfrenzy Records & Rhythmethod are delighted and extremely excited to welcome SONGS to their stable.
Songs are a Sydney based four piece (3/4 of the band are originally from New Zealand) releasing their limited edition debut E.P this month through their own self-run record label, The Spring Press.
Since the bands inception barely six months ago and before taking their music to a live audience Songs decided to document this initial body of work in the recording studio. With four songs written and a mere afternoon booked at Tardis Studios (who specialise in 'esoteric and vintage, recording equipment') the E.P was conceived live; in the same manner the band go about most they do, rather simply and to the point. Yet the results they yield here are somewhat of an oddity. With just over 10 minutes worth of music, is this charmingly amateurish or restraint considered to it s fullest? Either way these are pop songs unashamedly stripped back, revealing the bands mutual appreciation for the subtle songwriting obscurities that bind together the early Flying Nun catalogue.
Songs are Steve Uren, Max Doyle, Ela Stiles and Jeff Burch.
Max, Steve & Jeff all grew up in New Zealand. Max used to play in a lot of bands, some which did really well. Max then lived in London & New York in stints before settling in Sydney with his partner Michelle pursuing photography. Steve & Jeff used to play in a punk band called This Night Creeps together. Steve left after a couple years, moving to Sydney, Jeff followed about a year later.
“I met Max soon after I moved here, he ended up really helping me out & we became good friends. We had talked about writing simple pop with post punk & space rock influences, restrained playing & lyrics... before I knew it Max had written a bunch of songs & we had started meeting once a week to play them. After about 6 months & accomplishing all we could as a two piece we got Steve on board, Max found Ela & we began playing as a band. It started almost acoustically but slowly we have incorporated more textures & sounds, sonically it is getting more complex but the initial ideas are still there. It’s great to be able to explore more simplistic pop song writing as restraint is often quite a hard thing learned. Obviously our time music making in New Zealand is a big influence on what we do now. I think some of the best music in the world comes out of New Zealand; its pure, uninhibited & inspirational, people just go about what they do. It's a really good attitude to have and your art benefits from that I think” – JEFF BURCH
