The Mars Volta, the fucking Mars Volta.
Nothing quite like this band, and that’s a good thing as it’s a challenging listen. Fans of Mars Volta are fans for life and others just haven’t concentrated enough.
Mars Volta came abount from the Split of At the Drive In when one half formed the excellent Sparta and the other two formed this band.
For those not accustomed to the Mars Volta, their sound is kind of free jam, like King Crimson or Zappa, with soaring guitars and strange effects throughout, and this album sees the band extending on their openness and raising the stakes further.
No other band can combine these riffs and complex interchanges like Mars Volta, and they hang on to their sound by basically kicking the ass of any other ‘trickcore’ band (that’s right I said it!)
