Be it through Classic Bulgarian Folk Choral Arrangements or Obscure Rural Treasure Songs issue of TUi MAMAKi’s love affair with Bulgaria, sometimes arranged for improvisation, MEDENA ENSEMBLE explore that compelling vocal tone, bewitchingly close harmony, playful odd-meter rhythms, and the colourful feminine fabric of a community blend. Medena means honeyed!
Between performances at the 51st Auckland Folk Festival and the World Choir Games this year, Medena are delighted to invite you to the Unitarian Church on Sunday 19th May at 3pm, to bath in the evocative resonance of Bulgarian women’s song, as performed in Aotearoa/NZ today.
We are honoured to feature our very special guests, the “Bulgarian Roses” Dance Ensemble, led by the wonderful Marieta Kolarska. This beautifully costumed, traditional Bulgarian women's dance ensemble - with stunning footwork and zest to spare - will bring the “horo” (moving line dance) alive in several of our most rhythmic vocal pieces.
Seats are limited.
